Prof Daniel Carey
Chair of the Irish Research Council


Professor Daniel Carey, School of English and Creative Arts at University of Galway, is Chair of the Irish Research Council and Secretary for the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Royal Irish Academy.
He served as Director of the Moore Institute at the University of Galway 2014-2023. He was chair of the Irish Humanities Alliance 2014-16.
His publications include studies of the history of science and medicine in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the history of travel and colonialism, and the history and philosophy of money in the Enlightenment. His work has concentrated in particular on the philosophy of John Locke (1632-1704), including Locke’s collaboration with Robert Boyle and arguments for the foundations of scientific and experimental knowledge.
