Dr. Marie Greally
MB1965
Dr. Marie Greally (MB graduating class of 1965) recently received honorary membership of the Irish Society of Human Genetics in recognition of her lifetime achievements in the field.
A Locum Consultant Clinical Geneticist in Dublin, Marie has had an incredible journey. Balancing her medical studies with raising a family, she moved with her husband, John, to various cities in the US in pursuit of his career in pathology. Along the way, they faced personal tragedies, including the loss of a son to leukemia in 1968 and their fourth son in a road traffic accident in 2002. Despite these huge challenges, Marie's unwavering dedication led her to specialise in clinical genetics. She became board-certified in this specialty, overcoming obstacles, including recognition of her qualifications in Ireland. Her career took her to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, where she inspired future clinical geneticists.
I am honoured by this recognition from the Irish Society of Human Genetics. Building my career required perseverance and resilience but the opportunity to provide care and support to families dealing with genetic disorders has been extremely rewarding both personally and professionally.
Dr Greally initially intended to retire but returned to clinical genetics in 2007, joining the Department of Clinical Genetics at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) and the PISCES Lighthouse Epilepsy Project in Dublin in 2017. Her commitment to her patients and love for her specialty continue to drive her forward. Her family remains a source of happiness and pride, with her son, John Greally also pursuing a career in medical genetics.
