Dr Teresa Maguire

Director of Research Strategy and Funding, Health Research Board

 

Dr Teresa Maguire was appointed Director of Research Strategy and Funding at the Health Research Board in 2020. Prior to her current appointment, Teresa held a series of positions at the HRB, where she has contributed as a member of the management team since 2002. Teresa has responsibility for overseeing all HRB research funding programmes and the management and evaluation of all funded awards. Teresa works closely with the Department of Health, the HSE and other agencies to ensure that HRB programmes advance the shared goals of a research-active healthcare system, evidence-informed policy and practice and better health outcomes for all. Teresa oversees a diverse portfolio of activities to ensure that the HRB plays a lead role in the achievement of broader national research and innovation objectives (IMPACT 2030) and in maximises participation by the HRB and the health research community in EU and international research and innovation collaborations. 

 

Teresa participates on the High-Level Policy Network of Science Europe and is a member of the General Assembly of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). She oversees a diverse programme of HRB policy-related work in areas including open science, EDI, research integrity and culture and data management. In her current role, Teresa is involved in a number of national and European initiatives with the aim of influencing national policy, governance, legislative, technical and capacity developments to optimise the secondary use of health and social care data for research and innovation purposes.  

 

Teresa has a BSc in Pharmacology from University College Dublin, a PhD from the University of Dundee and a Master of Business from the Irish Management Institute/UCC. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Surgery in St Vincent’s University Hospital and as Director of Scientific Affairs with a multinational biopharmaceutical company before joining the HRB. Prior to taking up her current role as Director of Research Strategy and Funding in the HRB, Teresa spent time on secondment in the Department of Health to support the establishment of a Research Services & Policy Unit tasked with supporting evidence-informed decision making in the Department and advancing a broad-based health research strategy.
