Dr Enda O'Connell

With over 20 years of experience at the University of Galway, Dr. Enda O’Connell has developed a reputation as a highly skilled Senior Technical Officer and a passionate advocate for public engagement and outreach.

Specialising in high-throughput screening, high-content imaging and molecular biology, Enda supports cutting-edge biomedical research and provides technical expertise and training to researchers in the Genomics and Screening Core Facility.

Enda holds a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from University College Dublin and a first-class honours degree in Industrial Microbiology. His extensive technical expertise is complemented by a passion for education, and he has taught more than 400 MSc students in Biomedical Science and Biotechnology laboratory-based practicals since 2007.

As the founding Director of ReelLIFE SCIENCE, a Research Ireland-funded public engagement programme, Enda has led efforts to engage young people across Ireland and Northern Ireland in STEM through video competitions and other activities. Since 2013, more than 29,000 young people in over 800 schools and youth organisations have taken part in these initiatives. Managing a team of 100 volunteers and building strong relationships with partner organisations like Foróige has earned Enda recognition, including the President’s Award for Societal Impact 2020 and the Galway Science Person of the Year 2022.
