As a student there are many hidden gems close to the University of Galway campus that are just waiting to be found and explored. Come along as we reveal the must-see locations that will astound and captivate your senses. So, let’s take a trip and see where this journey takes us.

The Claddagh: A Seaside Historic Gem  

Just a short distance from the University of Galway campus, explore the historic neighbourhood of The Claddagh and take a step back in time.

Once a fishing village, this charming area radiates charm with its vibrant cottages and breathtaking views of Galway Bay. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade, take in the sea air's saltiness, and become fully immersed in the charming community's rich maritime history. Don’t forget to take your raincoat just in case!

You will also find a lot of seagulls picnicking about as you decide to get some sun too. Do say a hello to them, they are quite friendly.

The Center of Galway's Dynamic Culture: Eyre Square  

Now it’s time to head to Eyre Square, a hive of activity and culture, in the centre of bustling Galway. The Square that is oh so famous, is only a short stroll from campus. It is encircled by stores, cafes, and street entertainers, creating a vibrant atmosphere that perfectly captures the essence of the city.

Now to add to this vibrant urban oasis, do grab a coffee, take in the atmosphere, and observe the world going by. Being a student, a strut across the square can be a refreshing experience, since classes, assignments and exams can be daunting.

A Piece of Galway's Maritime History: The Spanish Arch  

A must-visit is the Spanish Arch, where history and you meet. This famous archway was originally a crucial port of entry for ships and trade when it was a part of the city's medieval walls.  

Presently, it serves as a representation of Galway's maritime heritage, providing tourists with an insight into the city's colourful history and an idyllic setting for priceless photographs. Not only that, you get to see the beauty of Galway at its peak.

Rich past you say? The perfect place to explore this side of things is the Galway City Museum, which is a veritable gold mine of relics and displays. I mean who does not love history right?

This museum, which is nestled behind the Spanish Arch, provides interesting storytelling, interactive exhibits, and artifacts from Galway's past. The Salthill Promenade is a Coastal Retreat  

OMG where is the beach? Well, here is a surprise. A short distance from the University is Salthill Promenade, a picturesque coastal stretch where you can relax and escape the bustle of the city.

Marvel at the breath-taking views of Galway Bay and the Atlantic Ocean while strolling along the promenade and enjoying the soft sea breeze on your face. Salthill Promenade provides a tranquil getaway from the city, whether you're searching for a quiet retreat or a spot to enjoy water sports. This is the perfect time to just get your swimwear on and enjoy some sun. Remember there are no sharks so trust us. This isn’t Jaws.

Connemara National Park: An Entire Natural Environment

Adventure is out there, and you know it. Grab your Dora the Explorer backpack and head to Connemara National Park.

This is a pristine wilderness that is only a short drive from Galway City. Come here for a nature-filled adventure. Take in the breathtaking landscape's natural beauty as you explore its untamed mountains, serene lakes, and lush forests. Take a hike on charming paths, see local wildlife, and be in awe of the expansive, limitless vistas.

For both outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors, Connemara National Park is a paradise. Just make sure the snakes don’t get you. (Kidding Ireland does not have snakes) 

Quay Street: A Gastronomic and Cultural Pleasure

Isn’t it time to just unwind? 

Now you must treat your senses to a tantalising array of culinary treats and cultural experiences on Quay Street. This little busy hub thoroughfare is the centre of the city. So, savour the most authentic Irish fare at welcoming taverns, peruse artisan stores for one-of-a-kind mementos, take in the vibrant street's energetic vibe and listen to an occasional musician jamming his way out.

Quay Street offers something for everyone, whether you're in the mood for a filling lunch, a cool beer, or a taste of the local way of life. Do get a great pint to fullfill that smile, if you know what I mean.
