Galway Lights the Way in Erasmus Student Experiences

University of Galway is soon to celebrate an almost 40-year history of participation in the EU's flagship Erasmus+ Programme , which has been supporting students to study at European universities since 1987.

Today, the University works with 280 universities in 21 countries, exchanging up to 2000 students annually and seeding academic and professional staff collaboration in the EU.

This enduring legacy has recently been recognised at event at the EU in Brussels, crowning University of Galway as an Erasmus Champion.

The Shaping Student Mobility Beyond 2027 Conference at the EU Commission was designed to bring the leaders in European student mobility together, to mark their achievements and to chart future priorities and programming in student mobility.

Kristin Anderson, PhD accepted the prestigious Champion Award on behalf of the University and Global Galway for its achievements and leadership in the area, particularly in advancing Erasmus+ digitalisation, and building data-driven and user-focused systems that enable international engagement and contribute to our shared European cooperation goals.

She was joined by JB Terrins, Head of Global Mobility, and EU Officials along with the other European Champions for an exchange of ideas on how Erasmus+ continues to evolve in an ever-changing global landscape. The discussions reinforced the vital role that mobility, partnership, and shared learning play in strengthening the European Higher Education Area.

It was meaningful for Galway to share the occasion with the University of Tartu, one of our valued partners within the ENLIGHT European University network, highlighting the strength of the relationships that underpin European university cooperation.

As part of its Champion role, Galway also spearheads efforts in Ireland, alongside the Higher Education Authority, to advance digitalisation efforts in fellow HEIs via workshops and visits.

Watch this space as Galway continues to light the way in Europe in providing the very best of global learning and experience opportunities for our students, staff and partners!
