My ENLIGHT Experience – Winter School: Fake News
I attended the ‘Winter School: Fake News’ module. The Winter School programme explored misinformation, disinformation, and mal information, looking beyond "fake news" to discuss propaganda on social media and in information warfare. With insights from lecturers across Europe, it emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in both perpetuating and combating fake news. A highlight was visiting ESET's headquarters to learn about identifying red flags in information. The programme stressed the importance of discerning fact from fiction to build a more informed society through an interdisciplinary and multifaceted lens.
Studying the Winter School module has been immensely beneficial for my personal and academic growth. Through my pursuit of a BA in Government (Politics, Economics, and Law), I've gained a profound understanding of the intricate dynamics between media, policy-making, and public perception. In today's age of rapid information dissemination, discerning the origins and implications of 'fake news' has evolved from academic curiosity to a crucial civic duty. This module has enhanced my understanding and equipped me with invaluable analytical skills and knowledge, particularly relevant to my aspirations in the civil service and policy arena. By delving into the complexities of misinformation, I've not only expanded my understanding but also honed my ability to combat its spread effectively. This experience has empowered me to actively contribute to building a more informed and resilient society, ready to confront the challenges of misinformation with confidence and clarity.
I visited Bratislava and it was truly wonderful. The city impressed me with its cleanliness and sense of safety, and I appreciated the well-maintained infrastructure, including the efficient public transport and abundance of amenities. I particularly enjoyed exploring the charming old town with its historic architecture and winding streets. I found the contrast between the old and new parts of the city intriguing, with the old town exuding a timeless charm while the new town boasted modern amenities such as retail outlets and towering corporate and residential buildings. The friendly locals truly added to the positive experience, and I left Bratislava with a desire to return and discover more.
I would advise other students interested in ENLIGHT opportunities to take advantage of the interdisciplinary nature of ENLIGHT to explore topics from multiple perspectives and broaden your understanding. Additionally, seize the chance to connect with peers and experts from different backgrounds and cultures, as this collaboration can enrich your learning experience as well as personal development, thus opening doors to new opportunities.
