My Journey to Galway

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
~ Lao Tzu

My journey to Galway and to the University was one characterised by adventure, anticipation, unexpected twists, and a whirlpool of emotions.

My name is Ved, and I am a first-year student from India pursuing the B. Comm Global Experience programme. This is the story of how I came to call the University of Galway my new home away from home.

The first step was sparked by a desire to push boundaries: to study abroad, challenge my comfort zone, and develop greater independence. Well, before finishing high school, I became proactive. The world of universities seemed vast and overwhelming at first. Still, I invested months in research, attending career fairs, sending countless emails, and thoroughly comparing institutions across Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia.

I even created my own checklist, “Things I Need to Do to Get into University,” to ensure nothing was overlooked. From academic excellence and extracurricular involvement to internships and personal projects, every detail counted. Alongside the excitement, the process was demanding and exhausting; each application came with unique requirements, and every new opportunity brought a mix of hope and doubt.

Eventually, key factors refined my search: quality of education, faculty calibre, campus environment, opportunities for work and research, and cost of living. Gradually, Europe began to emerge as the most promising destination.

It was at an education fair in my hometown where the path to Galway became clear. Various Irish universities were represented, but the University of Galway immediately stood out. The representatives were genuinely welcoming and spoke passionately about the campus, the faculty, and the student experience. The university’s global ranking, the richness of its academic programmes, and the beauty of its campus were compelling reasons to apply.

There was a moment at the fair when everything else seemed to fade—it was as if the University of Galway’s booth was the only thing illuminated. The institution’s commitment to academic excellence, community impact, and student support was evident from the very first conversation.

Throughout my application process, the guidance provided by the University’s support team was exceptional. From answering questions about the portal to clarifying selection criteria, every inquiry was handled with care and expertise. This ensured that a complex and often stressful process felt achievable.

However, the journey was not without setbacks. I faced several rejections and moments where resilience was tested. Despite these challenges, I held on to hope, and on March 3rd, received an unforgettable offer from the University of Galway—including a scholarship. The sense of accomplishment after years of hard work was unparalleled.

The weeks that followed involved intensive paperwork: visa applications, paying fees, arranging accommodations, and adapting to new uncertainties. Each hurdle demanded patience and determination. The wait for visas was anxious, but finally receiving them was a relief—another step closer to the dream.

The farewell to home was bittersweet. Leaving family and friends behind required courage. But as I stepped into the taxi, boarded the flight, and landed in Ireland, the excitement became uncontainable. After a brief visit with relatives in Dublin, my family and I travelled across the scenic countryside to Galway. Galway itself exceeded all expectations. The city bursts with life and colour, and the people are remarkably welcoming. Visiting the University for the first time was awe-inspiring; the Quadrangle, with its ancient stone walls and vibrant gardens, resembled the setting of a classic fairytale.

When my parents returned home after a week, it marked a new chapter. Those initial days were emotional but laid the foundation for personal growth and independence. Now, a few months into my studies, I can genuinely say that the University of Galway has rewarded every challenge with unmatched opportunities, inspiring faculty, and a supportive atmosphere that encourages ambition and belonging. The journey here was difficult and demanding, but the reward—the chance to be part of this exceptional university—has made every effort worthwhile.

If anyone finds themselves at a crossroads, wondering whether to take that first step, my advice is simple: do it. The road may be challenging, but the destination might just transform your life.
