My Year at University of Galway
Dia duit, Shambhavy Avasthi here. I am a master’s student in Information Systems Management at J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics. I hail from Lucknow in northern India, a city renowned for its rich history, culture, exquisite cuisine, Chikan embroidery, stunning architecture, and literary heritage.
I once read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, a book about the power of manifestation. When I embarked on my journey toward a master’s degree, I was quite uncertain. I relied on the power of manifestation (along with lots of paperwork as an international student :D) to navigate my path.
With a year in the mesmerising city of Galway and my master’s degree nearly complete, I realise how true those words in the book are. I remember arriving with my brother and sister-in-law and all of us were utterly captivated by the city's beauty and lively culture.
Little did I know that time, that this year would become the best phase of my life. Leaving family and friends behind was tough, but it has been all worth it.

After nearly five years in the corporate world, I had almost forgotten how exciting life could be and how beautiful nature is. My journey to Galway has been profoundly transformative, revealing opportunities I never imagined.
Gaining admission to University of Galway was a significant achievement, especially in the course I aspired to. I have met individuals from diverse backgrounds, formed lifelong friendships, celebrated my first hackathon victory, and received the prestigious Employability Award. University of Galway truly fulfils its promise of a place for everyone. Over a year later, I have accomplished so much and believe there is still much more to discover.
Securing campus accommodation was a stroke of fortune. My picturesque residence, with a majestic river outside my doorstep, captures Galway’s beauty at every turn. The vibrant atmosphere and natural splendour are remarkable. As a beach enthusiast, the scenic shorelines are a dream come true. Its bustling, cosmopolitan city centre, vibrant shopfronts and unique café-bar culture add to the charm.
Studying is paramount, but these little joys remind you how strong you are, even far from home.
As my course nears completion, I have gained countless new experiences, stories, and most importantly, the confidence to thrive anywhere. Also, I have FINALLY mastered the campus map :D (the university is huge) and have adapted to Galway’s "four seasons in a day" weather, well... almost! (Good rain shoes are a must).
I will cherish this time for the rest of my life as I return to the corporate world with new skills and a renewed sense of self.
