My Journey to University of Galway - Namus Cader
Hello everyone! I am Namus Cader, your Students' Union International Student Officer and I am excited to share my journey to the University of Galway.
Originally from Sri Lanka, I am currently pursuing an MSc in International Accounting and Analytics at the School of Economics and Business. Growing up in a multicultural society, I quickly learned to embrace diversity, integrating seamlessly with people from various races, ethnicities, and beliefs. This upbringing instilled in me a passion for volunteering, which led me to participate in global events such as the FIFA World Cup, the Asian Football Confederation, and the UEFA Champions League.
Academically, my journey has been equally diverse and enriching. I completed my CIMA and ACCA (UK) qualifications alongside an undergraduate LLB degree. My professional training took place at two of the Big Four accounting firms, PwC and EY. This rigorous training equipped me with the skills to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Thereafter, I relocated to Botswana for a career opportunity, where I led the audit division as an Audit Manager. During this time, I had the privilege of training and mentoring local staff, many of whom are now qualified chartered accountants. Working in Botswana offered an additional opportunity for me to develop an interest in learning about nature, wildlife and safaris.
My diverse professional experience across various regulatory environments sparked my interest in the intersection of information technology and accounting. This curiosity led me to pursue an MSc in International Accounting and Analytics at the University of Galway, where I could deepen my knowledge and explore these areas further.
However, my journey as an international student has not been without challenges. From the application process to settling into a new academic environment, I faced numerous hurdles. These experiences fuelled my desire to advocate for international students, leading me to run for election as an International Students Officer. The campaign, the hustings, and the election itself were transformative experiences, shaping me into a more resilient and determined individual.
"I am deeply grateful to the University of Galway for the unwavering support I have received throughout this journey. "
The campus is a true embodiment of unity in diversity, equality, and inclusion, values that are consistently reflected by both administrative staff and professors. I am confident that every student who walks through these doors will feel the same sense of belonging and support that I have experienced.
Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. I look forward to the continued growth and shared experiences that lie ahead at the University of Galway as an elected International Students Officer.
