Prof Peter Kelly

Professor of Neurology, University College Dublin


Prof Kelly is Stroke Service Director, and Professor of Neurology at Mater University Hospital/University College Dublin (UCD). He trained in Vascular and General Neurology in Dublin and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He holds degrees in medicine, physiology, and clinical investigation from UCD, Harvard University and MIT, and is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
He is the current President of the European Stroke Organisation. He serves on several ESO leadership bodies and was inaugural Chair of the ESO Trials Alliance (ESOTA). He is Lead Investigator for the Health Research Board Stroke Clinical Trials Network Ireland, was Neurology Clinical Lead for the Irish National Stroke Programme from 2010-2016, and has served in leadership roles on the AHA/ASA International Stroke Conference and multiple guideline bodies.
His research focus is on stroke and atherosclerosis, specifically clinical trials of new therapies and risk prediction to improve prevention of recurrent events in high risk patients. He is Chief Investigator on the CONVINCE and EPICS-Pilot trials and several other studies, has published widely in clinical neurovascular science, and serves on the editorial boards of leading journals in the field of stroke medicine.
