Prof Faisal Sharif
Prof of Translational Cardiovascular Medicine and Innovation/Interventional Cardiologist
Faisal Sharif is the Professor of Translational Cardiovascular Medicine and Innovation in Cardiology at the School of Medicine. He is Non-Executive Director of BioInnovate Ireland and Programme Director of the Masters in Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine at University of Galway. He is also a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Galway University Hospital.
He completed his specialist training in Clinique Pasteur, Toulouse, France and Aalst Cardiovascular Centre in Belgium. He holds MD, PhD (University of Galway) and a Masters in Hospital Management.
Professor Sharif has played a significant role in developing a MedTech ecosystem at University of Galway, by co-founding and establishing BioInnovate Ireland, BioExel, and the Health Innovation Hub. He is a funded investigator for CURAM. In parallel, Prof Sharif has also established a very successful Cardiovascular Clinical Translational and Research Group at University of Galway.
In collaboration with Research Ireland, the Health Service Executive, and University of Galway, he is leading an €18 million project to implement a significant clinical research infrastructure at University Hospital Galway. This includes a state-of-the-art research CT scanner and a first-in-globe human research Catheterization Laboratory.
He is the Principal Investigator for multiple research initiatives in CURAM, INSIGHT and BioInnovate Ireland. His clinical research group has delivered high-quality clinical trials and translated numerous novel medical concepts to clinical reality. He is also the Principal Investigator for over 20 international clinical trials in interventional cardiology.
