Prof Patrick Serruys

Professor of Interventional Medicine & Innovation

Professor Patrick W. Serruys is a world-renowned expert in interventional cardiology and imaging with more than four decades of experience in clinical trials and innovation in medicine. He has pioneered several interventional procedures and devices such as BMS, DES, BRS and TAVI as well as imaging techniques including quantitative coronary angiography, quantitative IVUS, OCT, near spectroscopy combined with IVUS. In parallel, he has developed interest for non-invasive imaging of coronary artery disease combining anatomy and functional assessments of CCTA. 

For 20 years, Prof Serruys was Chief of the Interventional Cardiology department at the Thoraxcenter, Rotterdam.  He is Established Professor of Interventional Medicine & Innovation at University of Galway, Honorary Professor of Cardiology at Imperial College, London, and Doctor Honoris Causa in engineering from the University of Melbourne. 

Receiving multiple awards for his contribution to cardiovascular medicine, including the James B. Herrick Award by the American Heart Association (2006), Prof Serruys received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology in 2011 and a Gold Medal Award for outstanding contribution to the science and practice of cardiology from the European Society of Cardiology. 

Prof Serruys has been published in leading medical and cardiovascular journals. He is the founder and past Editor-in-Chief of EuroIntervention, the Official Journal of the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI), Co-Editor of the ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine, and has sat on editorial boards of more than 30 international scientific journals.
