Prof Seamus O'Reilly

Founder, National Green Cancer Clinical Trials Initiative, Cancer Trials Ireland

Seamus O’Reilly, BSc MB BCh BAO MD PhD FRCPI, is Consultant Medical Oncologist at Cork University Hospital, Hon Associate Professor at University College Cork and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Clinical Lead at Cancer Trials Ireland.  

He graduated in Science (Pharmacology)  and Medicine at University of Galway and completed medical oncology training at John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD where he was subsequently Assistant Professor in Medical Oncology. During fellowship training there, he completed a PhD in Clinical Investigation which focused on Cancer Pharmacology. He a founding trustee and former Chairperson of Cork ARC Cancer Support House, and was National Specialty Director in Medical Oncology at the Royal College of Physicians from 2013-2021. In 2022, he established the National Green Cancer Clinical Trials Initiative.  

He is a member of the Executive Board of the Breast International Group (2021-25), The MRC_NIHR_TMRP Greener Trials Working Group, the National Clinical Trials Oversight Group, the European Society of Medical Oncology Climate Change Task Force, and the National Research Ethics Committee. He has published over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals in oncology, clinical trials and in sustainability, and is Deputy Editor of BJC Reports. He is and has been lead investigator in cancer clinical trials in Ireland through his involvement in Cancer Trials Ireland.
