Prof Declan Devane

Declan is Professor of Health Research Methodology at the University of Galway. He began his career as a nurse and midwife before moving into clinical trials and evidence synthesis, completing a PhD in Clinical Trials at Trinity College Dublin. His research has focused on improving how trials are designed and conducted, and on how evidence is synthesised and translated into policy and practice. Declan has led dozens of systematic reviews and continues to work internationally on methods to make research more trustworthy, transparent, and relevant to healthcare.

In addition to his teaching, Declan directs Evidence Synthesis Ireland and Cochrane Ireland, and is Scientific Director of the HRB-Trials Methodology Research Network, leading teams that support the use of high-quality evidence in healthcare.

Within the MSc, he leads the Interpreting and Applying Statistics module, supporting students to develop the skills needed to understand, interpret, and apply quantitative evidence in healthcare decision-making.

Outside of work, Declan is an avid scuba diver and once held a Guinness World Record for the Longest open saltwater SCUBA dive (cold water).

Declan is a Professor of Health Research Methodology, Programme Co-Director of the MSc in EBFHC and leads our Interpreting and Applying Statistics module. Declan trained as a nurse and a midwife, meandered (with the help of opportunity, interest and luck) his way into trial methodology and evidence synthesis.

When he’s not knee-deep in evidence synthesis and statistics, you’ll find him 30 feet underwater. Declan is an avid scuba-diver and previously set a Guinness World Record for the ‘Longest open saltwater SCUBA dive (cold water).
