Recipients of the GNC Summer Research Scholarships 2023

Congratulations to Aoife O’Connell and Matthew Stevens on being awarded the GNC Summer Research Scholarships 2023.

The GNC Summer Research Scholarships are designed to give undergraduate students hands-on neuroscience research experience with the aim of encouraging and aiding them to consider a research career in neuroscience and develop a strong application to a PhD scholarship scheme such as the Irish Research Council. These scholarships provide a stipend for students to undertake a research project for a period of 8 weeks over the summer months.

Aoife O’Connell, a BSc Biomedical Science Student, will investigate the spatio-temporal hippocampal neuronal activity post Aβ exposure under the supervision of Dr Andrea Kwakowsky in the Discipline of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Matthew Stevens, a Psychology student, will examine Uncinate Fasciculus Microstructural Tract Integrity and Social Cognition in People with Schizophrenia compared to matched controls. His project will be conducted under the supervision of Dr Tom Burke in the School of Psychology.

The students will present their research findings at the GNC Annual Research Day later this year.
