Robbie Sinnott is head of the Research Infrastructure Unit in Dublin City University which operates all aspects of DCU’s Core Technologies, plus has an oversight and support role for all campus-wide research infrastructure, for example, research warehouse, equipment maintenance funds, equipment upgrade funds, SFI infrastructure calls, reducing instrument duplication, etc.
He has worked in DCU for 16 years and before taking up his current role and has been Operations Manager for the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute (BDI - a research institute focused on developing medical diagnostic devices for specific areas within oncology, cardio-vascular disease and infectious disease), and Centre Manager the National Centre for Sensor Research (NCSR - a large-scale research facility focused on developing future sensing technologies).
Prior to DCU, Robbie worked in a range of engineering and operations roles for Honeywell, FAAC, Motorola, IBM and Xsil Technologies Ltd.
He works closely with many other core facility managers nationally, in the UK and in Europe on issues such as best practices in core facility management, financial sustainability models, and staff development.
Robbie’s main focus is DCU’s Core Technologies and these open access cores are supported by a multidisciplinary team of technical officers with expertise in microscopy, flow cytometry, cell culture, high-throughput screening, genomics, materials analysis and additive manufacturing. The unit has over 50 high-end scientific systems and these instruments are available for use by all national and international academic researchers as well as industry and commercial entities.
