Sandra Galvin

National Programme Manager

Work

What’s your job title?

National Programme Manager- HRB - Trials Methodology Research Network

How long have you been working here?

8 years.

What does your day-to-day look like?

A lot of meetings with great people discussing Network activities, planning training, developing new collaborations and identifying funding opportunities. Communication is a large part of my job, so I spend time promoting the latest research in trials methodology nationally and internationally via email and social media. My role is very outward facing, so I am in touch with our Network partners across UL, UCD, TCD, UCC as well as within the University of Galway on a daily or weekly basis. I maintain regular contact with our international partners and funder (HRB) to share outputs and discuss impact and new ideas. I work closely with our Scientific Director Prof Declan Devane, and our team in the School of Nursing and Midwifery which includes Ms Carol Burke, Ms Deirdre Conway and Dr Tom Conway.

When would someone come to you?

In my main role as National Programme Manager, it would be to discuss the supports and opportunities of the Network. It could also be to discuss funding applications and the embedding of trials methodology work packages.

In my role as an elected member of Academic Council in the University, it would be to highlight an issue to be raised within the University Governance.

How do you prefer to end your work day?

A reflection of tasks and accomplishments that day, and review of the next days commitments.

What motivates you at work?

My colleagues / friends who work hard to ensure we all are supported and can achieve our goals. Our wider Network supports nationally and our international collaborators, who are always engaging and supportive, as well as innovative thinkers.

What’s a work-related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?

Creating an enjoyable career, that plays to my strengths, where there was no path.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about your position?

That Research staff are considered somewhat separate to the University. All staff in the University, regardless of the source of their salary income, can play a significant and valuable role in making the University a better place to work and develop.

What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?

We are establishing Ireland’s first Trial Governance Placement Scheme to build capacity in this area nationally and have the benefit of working with an excellent international collaborator.

Personal/Social

What was your first paying job?

Working in my parents’ shops. This type of work can teach you a lot about people!

Where did you grow up?

West Limerick – Shanagolden and Askeaton.

Are you a cat or dog person (or neither)?

Definitely dog. Our much loved 12 yr old Labrador Rocky passed away this year, I won’t be right for another 12 years. Thank you for the excuse to include his photo.

Are you a coffee or tea person?

Coffee...

What’s the best place you’ve travelled to?

Leuven, Belgium – my sister and her family live there.

What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekends?

Spend family time with my husband Barry and our two boys, Fionn (4) and Iarlaith (1). Pet farms, walks in Monivea woods and family visits to name a few.

What three items would you take with you to a deserted island?

I would be far too lonely to go, so I would just decline the offer 😊

What’s your favorite place to eat around Galway?

I finally had the pleasure of eating at Rúibín in Galway, it was exceptional.
