Research Excellence: Professor Esther Tippmann’s Work Recognised

Professor Esther Tippmann of the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics has reached a major research milestone. Her 2023 paper—co-authored with Professors Phillip C. Nell (WU Vienna) and Andrew Parker (Durham University)—has been named one of the top 10 most cited papers in the Strategic Management Journal, a world-leading publication in the field of strategy (ABS 4 world elite ranking).

The paper explores how senior management approaches non-routine problem solving, revealing that headquarters’ involvement can reduce solution effectiveness unless senior subsidiary managers are also engaged particularly when responding to external challenges.

Dr Noel Carroll Recognised with Two New Research Awards

Dr. Noel Carroll, Associate Professor at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics, recently earned two prestigious international research awards. At the International Conference on Information Systems in Bangkok, he received the AIS Outreach Practice Publication Award for his work on low-code/no-code platforms, aiding digital transformation and AI initiatives. His publication, How Shell Fueled Digital Transformation by Establishing DIY Software Development, was recognized for effectively transferring research to practitioners. Additionally, Dr. Carroll's co-authored paper, From Transformation to Normalisation: An Exploratory Study of a Large-Scale Agile Transformation, was named Runner-Up for the Journal of Information Technology Best Paper Prize 2023.

Professor Kate Kenny’s latest research in The Conversation UK uncovers the disturbing tactics used by former Harrods CEO Mohamed Al Fayed to silence whistleblowers on sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct. Drawing on over 15 years of research, Kate identifies four key strategies—organisational control, surveillance, legal intimidation, and dehumanisation—that allowed Al Fayed to evade accountability. Her powerful insights shed light on the systemic barriers that prevent victims from speaking out and call for greater protection for whistleblowers in all organisations.

A major global health report, the Lancet Countdown Report 2024, warns that children born in Ireland today will face malnutrition, shorter life expectancy, and a range of health risks due to climate change. Professor Karyn Morrissey, the only Irish researcher involved, highlighted concerns about food security, crop loss from extreme weather, rising heat-related deaths among older people, and the spread of infectious diseases. Thinking Beyond Event: Getting on Board with Sustainability - A Board Member Perspective.

As part of the Thinking Beyond event series, the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics hosted an online panel discussion on sustainability and its integration at the board-director level. The discussion addressed the growing investor and stakeholder demand for sustainable practices, as well as the increasing regulations on sustainability disclosure. The panel highlighted that sustainability is no longer a mere consideration, but a critical agenda item for boards. Despite this, many board directors expressed feeling ill-equipped to oversee the adoption of sustainable business practices.

J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics Contributes to Groundbreaking Report on Digital Readiness

The J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics played a key role in the development of the research report "Exploring Technology Readiness of Irish Small Businesses," launched in Castlebar. Co-authored by Professor Anuragini Shirish and John O'Shanahan of LeanBPI, with contributions from Dr Noel Carroll, the report highlights that over 25% of small businesses in Ireland report low levels of digital readiness, with microenterprises facing even greater challenges. The findings, based on the Technology Readiness Index, emphasise the need for targeted digital support to enhance the competitiveness of SMEs, a call supported by Minister Dara Calleary TD and Local Enterprise Offices.

International Visit from Prof Jonathan Doh, Villanova Business School

On Tuesday, 15 October 2024, the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics welcomed Professor Jonathan Doh from Villanova University as part of our ongoing partnership with the institution. Professor Doh delivered a talk on “Advancing Societal Impact in International Business and Management Research – and Publishing in Top Journals” from 3.30–4.30pm in the Deloitte Zone, Biz Hub @ Áras Cairnes. Seminar Recap: How Marketing CEOs Shape Strategy

The Marketing Seminar Series took place on Wednesday, 16 October 2024, at 12pm in the Whitaker Seminar Suite, Cairnes Building, with no registration required. As part of this year’s series, Dr. Shekhar Misra, Assistant Professor and Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Galway, delivered a talk on "When Marketer Gets the Top Job: How Marketing CEOs Influence Firms' Product Market Strategy." During the seminar, Dr. Misra explored how CEOs with marketing backgrounds shape the strategic direction of firms, particularly concerning their product market strategies.

Economics Seminar: Dr Darragh Flannery – "Does Homework Improve Student Achievement?"

Dr Darragh Flannery, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Limerick, delivered a seminar on October 17th 2024 on the impact of homework on student achievement across developed and developing countries. As part of this year's economics seminar series, his talk explored key findings from his research, which applies micro-econometric methods to education and health economics. Dr Flannery’s work has been published in top journals such as Economics of Education Review, Oxford Economic Papers, and Applied Health Economics and Health Policy.

On 14 October 2024, the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics and the School of Law hosted a packed event on the business and legal aspects of the digital games industry. Annual Workshop: The Centre for Economic Research on Inclusivity and Sustainability (CERIS)

The Centre for Economic Research on Inclusivity and Sustainability (CERIS) held its second Annual Workshop on 10–11 October 2024 at the Deloitte Zone, Biz Hub @ Áras Cairnes (CA239a). The event featured speakers from universities across Ireland, including UCD, Maynooth, UL, Queens, and UCC, discussing topics such as Environmental Economics, Spatial Economics, Health Economics, Human Capital, and Development Economics. The keynote speaker, Prof. Helmut Rainer, a Professor of Economics at the University of Munich, also contributed to the workshop. The event was open to all, with a great turnout.
