Shirley is a highly experienced Senior Technical Officer specialising in flow cytometry and research support at the University of Galway. With over 25 years in technical and scientific roles across academia, industry, and government laboratories, she has developed extensive expertise in immunology, molecular biology, and advanced analytical techniques.
Since 2011, Shirley has led the Flow Cytometry Core Facility at the University of Galway, supporting over 150 academic and industrial researchers annually. In this role, she provides training, technical expertise, and project guidance in experimental design, sample preparation, and data analysis, while also overseeing the operation and optimisation of state-of-the-art instrumentation. She has played a central role in establishing national cytometry networks, organising training workshops and conferences, and fostering collaborations across disciplines.
Shirley holds a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from the University of London, and an MSc in Molecular Genetics from the University of Leicester. Her research and technical contributions are reflected in multiple high-impact publications, successful grant applications, and collaborative projects with both academic and industrial partners.
At the Flow Cytometry Core Facility Shirley combines her scientific knowledge with a strong commitment to researcher training and support, ensuring that cutting-edge cytometry methodologies are accessible to a wide scientific community.
