J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics

This project is an interview-based action research for in-depth mapping and development of engagement with the SDGs at Target level for all faculty in the School of Business and Economics. The Sustainable Development Goals are a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future, more.

The project discovers how faculty live the SDGs in their Teaching, Engagement activities and Research. This is showcased in a website with individual profiles including videoed personal statements.

The project highlights existing work that is contributing to the SDGs in the business school as well as areas for learning and improvement. We are finding areas of shared interest across the School and the wider university, with the aim of discovering new opportunities for internal collaboration and external partnerships.

October 2023 update

One of the first outputs of the process is the identification of which SDG targets each faculty member is supporting/working towards.

The SDG oriented profiles aim to provide a holistic overview of the work of faculty that extends beyond traditional descriptions of research and teaching. The aggregation of this information begins to identify SDG strengths and gaps.We have found that work in the school addresses all 17 SDG goals and many of the targets. Soon it will be possible to search through the profiles to group faculty according to the SDG targets that their work addresses and help to identify commonalities across domains.

Taking an action research approach the project blends quantitative data from Scopus, SciVal and IRIS with qualitative interviews. The interview process takes a narrative approach to discover faculty members’ lived experience of the SDGs in their work and uses a new SDG platform Accelerating Action that takes users on a series of steps to help draw out granular elements of which SDG Targets apply to their work (teaching, engagement practices and research).

Already we are discovering important targets at our School.
