Prof Tim O'Brien
Consultant Endocrinologist and Director of REMEDI, University of Galway
Prof Timothy O’Brien is the Established Professor of Medicine in the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at University of Galway and Clinical Director for Medicine and Consultant Endocrinologist in Saolta University Healthcare Group.
He established the SFI-funded Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) with Prof Frank Barry in 2004 and is co-PI of the SFI Centre for Research and Medical Devices (CÚRAM) and Associate Director of the Centre for Cell Manufacturing Ireland, the only licensed mesenchymal stem cell production facility in Ireland. His research explores the development of regenerative therapies for diabetic complications. He has been coordinator of two EU consortia resulting in stem cell clinical trials, with results recently presented at the American Society of Nephrology.
Prof O’Brien has established partnerships with multinational and indigenous companies and is the co-founder of spin out company, Orbsen Therapeutics Ltd.
He has been a reviewer for 20 international journals, and funding agencies from 17 countries. He is currently the global co-editor in chief of Stem Cell Research and Therapy. He also serves as Director of the Confucius Institute of Chinese and Regenerative Medicine and the Joint Stem Cell Research Centre of University of Galway and Hebei Medical University.
