Tips for Making the Most of Your Time at University of Galway

We asked our Global Student Ambassadors to share their best advice for incoming international students at University of Galway, here is what they had to say...

Dive In

"Treat your time at Galway like an adventure, not just a checklist. It’s easy to get caught up in academics and routines, but don’t forget to explore beyond the obvious. Dive into events you wouldn't normally attend, try new activities, and chat with people outside your usual circles. The best experiences often come from unexpected moments, such as bonding over a shared struggle in a tough class or discovering a quiet, beautiful spot on campus where you can be yourself. Allow yourself to be surprised and embrace the spontaneity—Galway has so much to offer if you’re willing to look beyond the surface."

All the World’s a Stage

Research, Research, Research

"If you're considering University of Galway for your studies, try to just go through some of the topics that will be covered in your modules. This will help a lot when you're trying to juggle assignments, exams and part-time work all at once. Apart from this, try to engage in all/most lectures and labs from the very beginning, otherwise it will all seem overwhelming and challenging."

Stay Curious

"Do not be afraid to ask questions, if you're at the lecture and don't understand or have something that you wanna know, just ask. Lecturers will be happy to help and get to know you along the way, at least that is my experience."

Say Yes

"My advice is this - say yes to new experiences. Moving to a new place can feel overwhelming at first, but Galway has a way of making you feel at home. The people here are friendly, the campus is welcoming, and there’s always something happening, whether it’s a club event, a casual stroll along the prom, or a coffee chat with classmates. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there - ask questions, join societies, and explore the city. The more you embrace the experience, the more you’ll love it."

It's All About Balance

"University of Galway has a wonderful atmosphere; it's the perfect place to be an undergrad, especially if you're an international student! The university and the city itself are filled with people from all over the world, which means that during your time here, you're bound to learn so much, both in and outside of your course.

…this university has so many opportunities for you to step out of your academics and either keep in touch with your old hobbies or start entirely new ones! To succeed, you need balance, and this university provides many opportunities for you to find that balance."
