Prof William Powderly

Director of the Institute for Public Health, Washington University, St. Louis

William Powderly, M.D., is the Dr. J. William Campbell Professor of Medicine and the Larry J Shapiro Director of the Institute for Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis.  He is also Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Science and Director of the Institute of Clinical and Translational Science at the Washington University School of Medicine, where he is director of the Division of Infectious Diseases.   

 

Dr. Powderly has been actively involved in HIV-related clinical research for over thirty years.  He is the author of over 500 original manuscripts, reviews and book chapters.   

He has been a member of numerous advisory groups on HIV and infectious diseases for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Canadian Institute for Health Research, and the European Medicines Agency.  More recently, he oversaw Washington University’s clinical and translational research response to SARS C0V-2, and was lead PI for the NIH’s ACTIV trials of immunomodulators in the treatment of severe COVID.   

 

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland, the Royal College of Physicians (London) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is a Past President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
